Family Guy voice actor Mike Henry steps down

Mike Henry made an announcement on Twitter that he will no longer be voicing the Family Guy character Cleveland Brown on Fox.

Henry has voiced the character since the show’s inception in 1999. The character is an African American while Henry is white. Henry voice the character and his son, Rallo Tubbs, on the spinoff, which ran for almost 4 years, The Cleveland Show. He also voices Latina maid Consuela on the animated series. The actor believes characters of colour should be voiced by actors of colour. “It’s been an honor to play Cleveland on Family Guy for 20 years. I love this character, but people of color should play characters of color. Therefore, I will be stepping down from the role,” Henry wrote.

The announcement comes after two other recasting decisions for mixed race characters voiced by white actors: Jenny Slate on Big Mouth and Kristen Bell on Central Park.
