An Easton man has been arrested and charged with seven offenses after a hit-and-run crash that left a Pennsylvania woman dead on Independence day in Fairfield.
The 22-year-old Declan P. Kot was arrested Wednesday night and charged with a felony, and misconduct with a motor vehicle among other charges, after leaving the site of the crash that left 32-year-old Marileidy Morel Araujo dead on Saturday night.
Morel Araujo who lives in Matamoras, Pennsylvania was visiting family in Fairfield for the 4th of July weekend. She was out on Saturday evening at 7:30 walking her dog along Redding Road when Not hit her with his car and drove off. Also Read– Woman found dead in Zumbro Falls
A couple of passing drivers saw the accident and alerted the police who found Morel Araujo on the street.
Suspect identified from video footage
After police requested help from the public with the investigation, several residents submitted video footage. Fairfield detectives collected video footage from the neighborhood along Redding Road and found a white Dodge Ram pickup at the time of the crash fleeing the scene. The pickup truck had black rims and a large US flag flying from its rear two hitches, police said.
Debris from the crash was taken to a nearby dealership which revealed the parts were from a Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500, model years 2010 to 2016, according to police.
Police spotted the Dodge Ram on North Benson Road and took the driver Kot in for an interview. Detectives then arrested Kot based on the interview. Kot later posted bail of $150,00 and signed an agreement to not operate vehicle until his arraignment on July 15 Bridgeport Superior Court, police said.
The crash remains under investigation.
